Post Surgical Rehabilitation
Undergoing surgery can be a stressful and daunting experience. While the surgery itself is important, the recovery process is just as crucial. Post surgical rehabilitation plays a vital role in helping you regain your strength, mobility and independence after surgery.
What Is Post-surgical Rehabilitation?
Whole Rehabilitation is a specialized program designed to help you recover from surgery safely and effectively. It involves a variety of interventions, including:
- Exercises: These exercises are designed to improve your strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. They may include range-of-motion exercises, strengthening exercises and gait training.
- Manual therapy: This involves hands on techniques such as massage, joint mobilization and manipulation.
- Pain management: This may include heat, ice and electrical stimulation or any other technique to decrease pain
- Education: We'll learn about your condition, your surgery and how to manage your recovery at home.

ACL Rehab
ACL reconstruction can be brutal on your body. This kind of injury requires patience and professional care at every turn. We often see athletes come in with ACL-related injuries looking to get their bodies back to functioning like normal.

Timelines Post ACL Rehab
Believe it or not, it is generally recommended that you begin physical therapy treatments beginning right away. ACL rehab usually begins after the surgery in the recovery room. Patients who actively work on recovery may be able to get rid of their crutches in as little as seven days with the help of physical therapy.
After surgery, the most important place to begin is working on knee movements that focus on extension and ways to reduce the swelling. Stationary bikes and working on building back quad strength are all important parts of the beginning phases of recovery.
Because this is commonly a sports-related injury, we typically see patients who are worried about getting back to playing their sport right away. ACL rehab can take anywhere from 9-12 months in order to get cleared, but making sure that you are recovering in a safe and healthy way is the best way to get cleared to play once again.

Physical Therapy After Knee Replacement
Similar to ACL rehab, physical therapy following a knee replacement should happen pretty quickly. The longer that you stay off your knee post-surgery, the more difficult it will be to get back to normal life.
If you do not get started with physical therapy after having a knee replacement, you run the risk of:
- Blood clots
- Weakened muscles
- Limited knee movement
